New Student Advisor Checklist

Classification: Students who have less than 24 credit hour semesters are considered freshmen.

Guidelines

  • Open-ended get-to-know-you questions Students may change advisors at any time.
  • Review the Accepted Student Checklist
  • Confirm program and semester start Concentration/Minor? (If any changes, use Change of Major form-- note for student: this might change advisor)
  • Introduce advisee to Course planning worksheet as well as degree requirements for graduation.
  • Asks about their interest in <program>

Things to consider when talking to your advisee

  • Transfer Credits/Certifications? If Yes: Updated official transcript to UMFK? (Will need to send out a request to pull these transcripts from either Joyce or Barb if they are not showing on Course History or Transfer Credit Report)
  • Foreign Languages?
  • FLATs, CLEP, LTI
  • Housing - Living on or off-campus?
  • GI Bill/VA Benefits
  • Certification: Veteran Certification Request Form is under the Forms and Documents in UMFK Portal
  • Vaccination - Students who are participating in any on-campus experience must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
  • Check which major the students want to be in and if it corresponds with the major that is listed in their Main Street; also place the student in the correct FYE cohort.
  • If the student is an athlete—must successfully complete a minimum of 24 credits per year (Does not include classes that students are repeating)
  • The student is assigned the correct advisor in their field of study
  • If International Student—minimum of 12 credits
    to be full-time, and 9 credits face-to-face for SEVIS eligibility
  • If a student has a promissory scholarship—needs
    15 credits (30 residency credits per year through
    “UMFK”)
  • Emergency Medical Data form must be
    completed
