Advising Manual at UMFK

Transfer Students

Students are considered transfer students if they have 12 or more transferable credits taken at another postsecondary institution. The minimum GPA for transfer into most programs at UMFK is 1.75.

The exceptions to this are the following:

  • Traditional Nursing = 2.5 GPA
  • Accelerated Nursing = 3.2 GPA
  • RN to BSN Nursing = 2.5 GPA

Students should meet with their advisors to revise transfer credits and complete a transfer credit evaluation. Advisors may confirm with the Registrar’s Office/Joyce Plourde if there are any concerns or questions regarding a student's transfer credit evaluation. Advisors should encourage students to have their transcripts evaluated as early as possible.

Advisors may waive major and minor courses, as well as credits, but students still must earn a minimum of 120 credits.

If there are any questions regarding transfers of general education credits, refer to the Registrar's Office

Undecided

Advising Undecided Students

Not every student will know what they would like to major in. Therefore,

  • Let them know it is OKAY to be undecided for a while
  • Provide adequate information about Career Planning and options for the student.
  • Encourage the students to meet up with potential faculty members and students about a particular field of interest.
  • Ask a series of questions and provide suggestions to assist the undecided student.

Non-Traditional / PLA

Advising Non-Traditional Students/PLA

Non-traditional students may be in a transition phase of life and can benefit from creative advising. Non-traditional students may be out of touch with technology and higher education jargon.

As a result, this group of students may need...

  • Frequent contact from their advisor,
  • A glossary of college jargon
  • Incorporating technology into advising, and
  • Determining the assistance they need to be successful in the classroom and their career path.
