Blake Library at UMFK now has a Micro-Credential in Information Literacy available to our students. The Information Literacy Micro-Credential is just one of the UMS List of Micro-Credentials you can choose as part of a portfolio of Micro-Credentials. It is free and can be completed either in person or online.

What Is A Micro-Credential?

A “micro-credential” showcases your competency in skills that are needed in today’s workforce. A verified micro-credential is earned when learners are able to demonstrate what they know — and what they are able to do — related to a specific topic.

University of Maine System (UMS) micro-credentials are made up of stacked digital badges, which highlight the skills employers are seeking. They are offered to University of Maine System students and as professional development opportunities for individuals already in the workforce to advance or increase their marketability. Micro-credentials earned through the University of Maine System are:

Validated

Evidence-Based

Sharable

Portable

Stackable

What Is Information Literacy?

Information Literacy is an understanding of knowing what information you need, where to find that information, and how to find that information. It is also an understanding of how to evaluate information and understand the bias and inconsistencies one may find. The skills developed from learning the information literacy process will help you throughout most career choices you may make.

For example,
  • A Director of Nursing may need to research the latest trends in efficient scheduling
  • A Business Analyst may need to research new technical innovations to solve a current problem
  • A Forestry Technician may need to investigate a local fire risk and research new ways to mitigate such risk

Why Is It Important?

There is so much information available -- any time, anywhere -- but quality and accuracy can vary. You need to know how to find and evaluate information to ensure what you use is valid and trustworthy.

Being information literate means you have the ability to think critically, make informed choices, and can problem-solve -- essential skills that are highly valued by employers. Earning a micro-credential in information literacy will help you demonstrate you've got the right skills to succeed!
