Nursing Portfolio Resources and Help

Suggested Dos and Don'ts

  • When scanning documents,
    • Don’t scan multiple-page documents as images. One-page certificates or other similar artifacts can be scanned as images.
    • Do scan multiple-page documents as PDFs
  • When collecting your artifacts into Google Drive,
    • Don’t load them into the root folder, “My Drive.”
    • Do create a folder in “My Drive” to place all your artifacts and portfolio. If you follow the directions on the "Start Here" page, then you should be all set.
  • Before inserting artifacts into your portfolio
    • Do make sure all your artifacts are in your University Google Drive Account.
    • Don't insert artifacts from other Google accounts such as your personal Google account. This could cause confusion down the road. However, if you did or if you are trying to switch to your university account and it's not working, see the Troubleshooting page for help.
    • Don't insert artifacts from a Shared Google Drive or a "Shared with me" folder.
      • Do make a copy of a group artifact if you are not the owner of the artifact. Insert that copy into your portfolio instead of the shared artifact.
  • When sharing your artifacts in Google Drive so they can be seen in your portfolio,
    • Don’t share each individual artifact (assuming you followed the second bullet in this Do's and Don'ts list).
    • Do share only the one folder in which you collected all your artifacts and your portfolio.
    • Don't add people, unless an instructor asks you to
    • Do change the restricted access instead. See the Troubleshooting page for help.
  • When sharing your eportfolio (Google Sites) and artifacts (Google Drive),
    • Don’t “add” people to the site unless asked to do so.
    • Do change the “Restricted Access” option under “Get Link” to share with University of Maine System.
    • If you need additional help, try the Troubleshooting page.
  • When selecting your eportfolio link to share with your professors,
    • Don’t use the URL in your browser’s address bar (unless asked to do so).
    • Do share the link that the site provides you after you publish your portfolio.

Important Tips and Understandings

All Artifacts need to be in your UNIVERSITY Google Drive to insert into your portfolio

  • Google Drive is a place to STORE your files. Think of it as a file cabinet.
  • Moving Microsoft word documents or Excel spreadsheets to Drive does not mean you have to open them there or transfer their contents into Google applications.
  • Even if you open them, you will only get a preview with an option to open in a comparable format (such as Google Docs).
  • Sometimes artifacts made outside of Google applications will not preview correctly. You will have to download the artifact and open it in the correct application to make sure it is correct.
  • If you try to open, for example, a Microsoft Word document as a Google Docs document, the formatting may be different.

Other Elements of Your Portfolio

What to consider:

  • Title page is usually changed to Nursing Portfolio or something similar.
  • Name of the portfolio itself (not the URL) but the title at the top of the page that says “Copy of UMFK Nursing Portfolio” is usually changed to your name and keeping the ”UMFK Nursing Portfolio” e.g. “Sofia Birden UMFK Nursing Portfolio.”
  • Resume and Recommendations are usually added as documents rather than the text inserted.
  • You can add your Reflection/Philosophy as text or as a pdf.
  • The Outcomes descriptions are not deleted.
  • The instructions on each Outcomes page (and the “Other” page) are deleted once you understand what to do.
  • The “Other” page is deleted if you don’t have anything on it.
  • The “Other" page is meant for artifacts you want to include but doesn’t fall under any other outcomes.
  • If you have any empty boxes, remove them.
